Apps of the Week: three favorites from April 8, 2019

Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.

App of the Week

Blendeo [Free + subscription]

Blendeo is a sharp new photo app that lets you create and edit long exposure stills and videos for the full range of ethereal effects. Such techniques have long been a part of the enthusiast photographer’s toolbox, of course, but they’re a lot harder for a casual smartphone user to replicate. Making these advanced techniques accessible is Blendeo’s chief aim, and part of the way it does this is by enabling you to change the exposure time of a shot after it’s been captured.

Game of the Week

Rolando: Royal Edition [$3/£3]

Rolando was one of the original smartphone gaming stars during the early days of the App Store, but we haven’t been able to play it for a number of years due to compatibility issues. Rolando: Royal Edition sees original developer HandCircus completely rebuilding its pioneering effort for a modern audience. It’s the same bright and tactile physics puzzler, but with a much more polished look and feel. Here’s hoping the brilliant sequel gets the same treatment.

App Store Classic

TikTok [Free]

TikTok has been out there for years now, but it seems to be having a bit of a moment right now, filling the void that Vine left behind when it was shut down. This is a media app that lets you create, edit, embellish and share brief video snippets, and even edit yourself into other people’s creations. It’s all very viral and community-driven, and with more than 500 million users, it’s unlikely to be going away any time soon. Get in now before your ‘young at heart’ credentials take a further beating.
