Apps of the Week: three great apps from February 8, 2020

Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.

App of the Week

Doubletake by FiLMiC [Free]

Just a couple of months on from releasing its previous app, Firstlight, FiLMiC has another treat for us. Doubletake enables you to capture video footage from two cameras at the same time. You can simultaneously view all four cameras (if you have an iPhone 11 Pro), then select which two frames work best for the shot(s). It’ll seemingly be added to the FiLMiC Pro app as a feature in time, so think of this as a cool preview – provided you have an iPhone XR or better.

Game of the Week

Cookies Must Die [Free]

This is the kind of quirky and tactile casual physics game that used to be common on the App Store, but has fallen out of fashion somewhat. Cookies Must Die injects fresh life into the ‘drag to fling’ mechanic made popular by Angry Birds, using it to fuel a fast-paced bullet-time action-platformer. The graphics are bright and sharp, the gameplay’s smooth and deeply silly, and there are endless mutant cookies (you read that right) to splat.

Spark [Free]

Apple’s default Mail app is just fine for basic email management. But if you heavily rely on email in your day to day business, and have to deal with a significant volume of incoming messages, it’s far from the best solution. Spark is a power user’s dream, with potent swipe gestures, a dizzying amount of customization potential, and the most nuanced notification options on the App Store. Smart Inbox, meanwhile, will categorise your emails for you, so you can concentrate on what’s important.
