Apps of the week: The Room / Thumper / Four Last Things

The App Store has been a little lackluster in its offerings since Christmas, but it’s truly kicked back into life this week with three amazing new games dropping at the same time. We’ve got a long-awaited sequel, a slick port of a console hit, and a truly original adventure game to share with you today. The only downside is choosing which one to try first! Let’s take a look…

The Room: Old Sins

$5/£5 • 1.1 GB • by Fireproof Games

We say: the puzzle adventure that needs no introduction. If you liked any of the previous three “The Room” games, this won’t disappoint. And if you haven’t played any yet, it’s a solid place to start.

The developers say: be transported to a place where tactile exploration meets challenging puzzles and a captivating story. Explore unsettling locations, follow obscure clues and manipulate bizarre contraptions as you uncover the mysteries within Waldegrave Manor.

Thumper: Pocket Edition

$5/£5 • 224 MB • by Drool LLC

We say: this was a hit on console, and the mobile edition of this music-action game translates surprisingly well. Get yourself into the groove and test your reflexes with this satisfying one-thumb challenge.

The developers say: Thumper is rhythm violence: classic action, blistering speed, and brutal physicality. You are a space beetle. Brave the void and confront a maniacal giant head. Hurtle forward, master new moves, and survive terrifying boss battles. Propelled by a pounding original soundtrack, you’ll feel every crushing impact. To reach synesthetic bliss, you must conquer rhythm hell.

Four Last Things

$4/£4 • 652 MB • by Joe Richardson

We say: Four Last Things reworks Renaissance art and Biblical symbolism into a uniquely creative adventure full of dry jokes and surreal set pieces. Somehow, it really works.

The developer says: Pilfer from poets, bargain with bishops and serenade the local simpleton on your hapless quest for absolution. Four Last Things is a point-and-click adventure game made from Renaissance-era paintings. It’s kind of like if Monkey Island had been made in 16th century Flanders, by a time-traveling Monty Python fanboy…
