Touchgrind Skate 2 Review: Clever, tricky skating sim

We like the thinking behind Touchgrind Skate 2. Having presumably gotten sick of unsatisfying extreme sports games on iOS that boast awkward virtual controls, someone must have looked at an on-screen skateboard and realized two fingers looked quite a lot like legs. And when you play Touchgrind Skate 2, this control method seems entirely natural and obvious, with you kicking and flicking the board like a pro.

Actually, that’s perhaps a little ambitious – at least at first. Touchgrind Skate 2 might appear approachable and intuitive, but it’s also extremely tough to master. The tutorial is a barrage of tricks and techniques, and it’s a lot to take in. Your first few competition sessions will almost certainly be filled with frustration.

But like a real-world sport, Touchgrind Skate 2 rewards practice, patience, and perseverance. Learn to perfect each trick and it soon comes naturally; figure out how to get from one to the next, and you can chain them for bigger scores; then you can venture towards the more complex environments and ‘pop shuvit’ with the best of them, in by far the best extreme sports effort a touchscreen can provide.

The controls in Touchgrind Skate 2: clever, but also really hard to master.
