Angry Birds 2 is coming! Sequel given release date

It feels like Angry Birds has been around forever – the mainstay App Store favorite was first released in 2009, and though it has adaptations such as Bad Piggies or Angry Birds Stars Wars, as well as the Seasons spin offs, it’s never received a full-on sequel.

However, the game’s developer Rovio has revealed that Angry Birds 2 is coming, and it will be released on July 30.

Little more information has been revealed, but Rovio promises more details will be forthcoming.

Angry Birds is one of both the App Store and mobile gaming’s success stories, spawning 15 adaptations or spin offs from the original game, which in total has seen around 3 billion downloads.

However, it hasn’t all been plain-sailing for the Finnish developer, in 2014 it made a round of layoffs due to falling profits after the game’s dominance waned.

No doubt Rovio will be hoping the full-on sequel will put its franchise back on top. It hasn’t been revealed what platforms the game will be available on, but it’s almost certain iOS and Android will be able to access the game on launch day, while back in 2009, PlayStation, Xbox and Wii U users were all able to play the original game as well.

An Angry Birds movie is also in the works and will arrive in 2016. To sign up to be notified when the game hits the App Store head over to the Angry Birds 2 website.
