Apple adds iTunes Extras to Apple TV and iOS 8

Following a recent update to iTunes, Apple has made iTunes Extras available on Apple TV and in iOS 8 when it’s released later this year.

iTunes Extras are the kind of features you’ll find on DVDs such as deleted scenes or interviews with the crew. As Apple explained to Loop Insight, ‘iTunes Extras can include behind-the-scenes videos, short films, high-resolution image galleries, directors commentary, scenes and more.”

The Extras are only available on movies purchased in HD but are stored in the cloud. This means that studios can update the content at any time, unlike DVDs. Apple currently has iTunes Extras available for quite a lot of movies including 21 Jump Street; 300: Rise of an Empire; American Hustle; Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues; The Bourne Identity; and many more. There is a new section in the iTunes store if you wish to check out the full list.

The extras features have long been available when using Tunes on a desktop or laptop, and originally on the first-generation Apple TV. Following a new Apple TV model released in 2010, iTunes Extras have been oddly absent.

If you’ve previously purchased any of the compatible HD movies then these extras will be added free of charge. You can download the new version of iTunes by heading to the iTunes website.
