Apple announces a big, more gender-diverse emoji upgrade for iOS 10

Apple has announced more than one hundred new and redesigned emojis will come to the iPhone and iPad this fall with the release of iOS 10.

The highly popular icons have already been given pride of place in the Messages redesign of iOS 10, which includes new features that automatically suggest emoji replacements for words where an icon exists.

The update, expected this September alongside a new range of iPhones, brings more gender options to existing emoji characters – Apple draws particular attention to athletes and professionals here, while the update also sees the addition of a rainbow flag, and, significantly, the ditching of the gun emoji in favor of a water pistol.

In a statement on Apple’s online Newsroom the company stated: “Apple is working closely with the Unicode Consortium to ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere.”
