Apple posts mysterious “Celebrating Indie Games” tweet – event lasts for 12 days

We’ve all heard of the twelve days of Christmas, but the twelve days of indie apps is a new one on us. However, it looks like Apple is launching some kind of independent games week (and a bit.) A mysterious tweet from the App Store Games account yesterday revealed Apple will be celebrating “the best independent game developers on the planet,” between 9-20 March.

So, what does this mean? It means when you open the App Store over the next 12 days, most of what you see will be games. In the rotating carousel at the top of the App Store, a number of games from independent studios will be promoted. This includes the likes of Device6, Super Hexagon, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (one of the App Store’s first indie hits,) uber-smash Monument Valley, and Transistor.

The majority of the other sections on the App Store home page are celebrating indie games as well, and they’ve also been given a bump in the ‘new games we love’ section, with Mushroom 11, out this week, in the first spot.

Games are the biggest category on the App Store so it’s no surprise to see some serious innovation coming from independent developers. So, if you want to take some time out over the next couple of weeks to play some seriously unique titles, be sure to stay tuned to the App Store.
