Hit card game Exploding Kittens lands on iOS, with local multiplayer

Exploding Kittens, the most-funded game in Kickstarter history has just landed on iOS.

The app sees the original, physical card game, in which players have to avoid putting down exploding kitten cards, and thus losing the game, turn digital. Just like the card game, it requires between two to five players to play.

Now, the eagle-eyed might have picked something up there – that’s right, there’s no single player option.

That means if you spend the $1.99 / £1.49 on the game, you’ll have to convince at least one of your other friends to buy it too, because there’s also no pass and play on a single device. Furthermore, you’ll have to make sure they’re someone you enjoy spending time with, because its local multiplayer only – there’s no online play.

Play with others in the same room

Even though it looks super-slick and gameplay appears to hold up, the limitations have already frustrated players and fans of the original game who’ve given the game underwhelming reviews on the App Store.

User KamikazeSkunk put it fairly pointedly when he wrote: “Each person has to purchase the game, and you have to be in the same room. So I might as well just pull out the card game I already purchased.”

Exploding Kittens was created by Shane Small, Elan Lee, with artwork from comics site The Oatmeal’s Matthew Inman. It was launched on Kickstarter in January 2015, seeking $10,000 in crowdfunding, which it exceeded in eight minutes. The project finished with 106,000 backers, pledging $8.7m making it the fourth most funded campaign in Kickstarter’s history. The game started shipping in July 2015.

If you’ve got some buddies hanging around and want to give Exploding Kittens a shot on iOS, then you can find it now priced $1.99 / £1.49 on the App Store:
