More from the App Store – great apps you might have missed [13 August 2021]

Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.

App of the Week

Mastodon [Free]

A new, open source, decentralized social network that brings together a network of millions of users in independent communities in a blissfully ad-free environment. As you might have gathered from that description, this is a social network that seeks to fix many of the problems with the usual suspects. To that end you can decide whether your posts are shared with your followers, people you mention, or everyone. You can also filter out posts that contain sensitive material.

Game of the Week

My Friend Pedro [Free, $3/£3 Premium]

A hugely entertaining mobile spin-off of a beloved indie game, published by indie champion Devolver. My Friend Pedro combines classic touchscreen swipe-to-ping controls (think Angry Birds) with the kind of acrobatic gunplay you might expect to see in your average John Woo movie. It’s slick, tactile, action-packed stuff that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s free to download, but a one-off payment will unlock checkpoints and an additional game mode.

Vinted [Free]

Vinted is an excellent way to buy and sell second-hand clothes from the comfort of your iPhone. Reports suggest it’s been doing a roaring trade during lockdown, and we can see why. There are no fees, no limits, and joining up means getting involved with a conscientious community of fellow ‘circular fashion’ enthusiasts. The app will help you deal with shipping labels, buyer/seller questions, and payments in an intuitive manner, and it all looks suitably stylish.
