More from the App Store – great apps you might have missed [21 January 2022]

Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.

App of the Week

Locket Widget [Free]

Locket Widget does an intriguing thing with iOS 15’s home screen Photos widget. Rather than showing your own photos in a little preview rectangle, it shows pictures shared by your five closest friends and family members. You’re essentially offered little glimpses at what your loved ones are up to as you go about your daily business. When you receive a new Locket pic, just tap the widget and take a pic to return the favor.

Game of the Week

Heck Deck [$2.99/£2.49]

Heck Deck lays on an extremely novel mash-up of a concept. This “bullet hell card game” loosely resembles a classic arcade shoot-’em-up, but the unfolding chaos only moves forward in time when you move your little ghost. What’s more, the bullets from your enemies and the destructive weapons you equip yourself all take the form of playing cards, which must be dealt in at the appropriate moment. It looks tough, strategic, and incredibly cute.

Pixelmator [$4.99/£4.49]

Pixelmator Team finally brought its Pixelmator Photo app to iPhone, resulting in arguably the finest and most streamlined pure photo editor available for Apple’s phone. For those who want the full expansive desktop-like experience, however, there’s regular ol’ Pixelmator, which supplies full layer support for photos and a fully fledged painting app for you digital artists. You can also bring words, shapes, and images together in all-inclusive works of graphic design. It’s a frighteningly comprehensive image creation and editing app.
