More from the App Store – great apps you might have missed [29 April 2022]

Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.

App of the Week

Heart Hive [Free]

Heart Hive takes health and fitness data shared anonymously through Apple’s Health app by people all over the globe, then lets you compare it with your own – anonymously, of course. It looks to be a fine way to see how your own performance stacks up, whether it’s heart rate, cardio fitness, respiratory rate, or any one of the other metrics. Naturally, employing an Apple Watch will yield more detailed results.

Game of the Week

Knotwords [Free]

The latest game from App Store indie superstar Zach Gage (SpellTower, Typeshift, Good Sudoku) is another devilishly clever word game with a twist. This time the premise is ‘Crosswords without Clues’, with each puzzle requiring you to fit words into a familiar criss-crossing horizontal and vertical arrangement, but without the need for any kind of general knowledge expertise. There’s the usual clean presentation and generosity of spirit we’ve come to expect from Gage too.

App Store Classic

Afterlight [Free]

Afterlight is a photo app that has won a lot of fans for its balance between high-end filter manipulation and more pro-level power features. It makes editing photos incredibly intuitive, with a full suite of tweaking tools, from Advanced Curves to frames and borders and custom fonts. There aren’t many apps that bring pro-level features to the Instagram generation with this much skill or enthusiasm.
