Apps of the Week: three great apps from July 26, 2019

Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.

App of the Week

Moon Walk – Apollo 11 Mission [Free, $5/£5 full unlock]

As we mark the occasion of 50 years since man first walked on the moon, the perfectly timed Moon Walk – Apollo 11 Mission app puts us right up there with Armstrong and Aldrin. It starts with a stirring full-screen video montage of the mission launch, and from there you can take an AR-powered walk on the moon, complete with interactive objects and audio snippets. You’ll need a fairly large area to experience this space walk in full, but that’s one small step for an iPhone user to take.

Game of the Week

Chessplode [Free]

If you played and loved Zach Gage’s Really Bad Chess as much as we did, then Chessplode will come as a real treat. It too takes a brickbat – or rather, a bazooka – to the legendary board game. Whenever you take an opponent’s playing piece here, you’ll destroy any other pieces in the same row or column, unless there’s a King in the firing line. Add in a totally mixed up board, and you have a thrillingly fresh and speedy twist on the Chess formula.

Google Drive [Free]

It’s one of the less flashy apps in the formidable Google stable, but Google Drive is arguably the most powerful and important of them all. Let’s not beat around the bush here: Google Drive is the best cloud storage service out there. You get 15GB of online storage as standard, but you can boost that to 100GB for $2 a month. You’ll probably want to invest, as Google Drive is at the heart of Google’s peerless suite of collaborative online services, including Docs, Sheets, Slides and Google Photos .
