Goodbye Newton: popular email app shuts down

Less than six months ago we were reviewing Newton Mail for iOS, raving about its impressive feature set and claiming it could change the way you deal with email forever. Well, scratch the forever part – Newton’s developers have just announced the service will be shutting down for good next month. Goodbye, Newton!

Though Newton Mail was a critical success, receiving all kinds of praise across its iOS and desktop iterations, the team never found a way to successfully monetize the service. With Apple, Google, and others offering decent email clients for free, it’s a tough sell to convince somebody to pay money for a better one. Especially after Newton’s most recent price hike to over $100/£100 per year.

Newton is the most recent name to fall to the scrapheap, after another of our favorite email apps, Alto, said goodbye last year. If you took our recommendation to heart earlier this year and enjoyed Newton as much as we did, you’ll be wondering where to go next. Spark is about the best third-party email client we’ve tried, but in truth it’s hard to beat Gmail.

We’ll be sure to let you readers know if another email app catches our eye, and Newton subscribers should at least be happy that the company is currently organizing refunds for its annual subscribers.
