Who is it for? Creators who want quick edits

What makes it special? Instagram integration and smart tools
Edits is a short-form video editing app from Instagram, aimed primarily at making reels for the social network but equally capable of knocking up vids for other purposes and platforms. The app is now 6 months old and has been gaining features fast – about time we took a look, eh?
The app lands in a crowded field dominated by video editing heavyweights CapCut, InShot, and others. By contrast, Edits feels much more lightweight – which is a double-edged sword. While lacking in some more advanced features, it resists the bloat of its competitors while offering an experience that’s a huge upgrade from the editor built into Instagram itself. It’s familiar but powerful, and it won’t crash on you or lose your drafts like Instagram does on its own.
The core experience is refreshingly streamlined. You get the essentials – like trimming and splitting on a timeline, adjusting speed and audio, adding transitions, filters, overlays, etc – plus loads of nice fonts and text effects. I haven’t missed many tools from the big apps so far, in fact, I’ve enjoyed the lack of tacky gimmicks. There are thoughtful touches, too, with built‑in spaces to stash inspiration and notes alongside works‑in‑progress, which makes it easier to plan before you cut.
Because Edits is made by Instagram, posting there is smoother than with other editors. You can add licensed music while you edit, which is a big deal, and many creators suspect Instagram’s algorithm favors videos made with Edits. That’s hard to prove but easy to believe given Meta’s incentives to keep you hooked on posting.
Trade-offs? You can’t log into multiple accounts, many of the AI-powered tools feel half-baked, and the captioning system needs work. If you’re editing needs are ambitious, you might outgrown these tools – but for relatively simple edits, this is a great middle ground.
If you can stomach Instagram expanding its stranglehold on your time, the reward is a genuinely good editing app that’s completely free. For my own use, it’s solid enough that I’m planning to cancel my subscriptions to the heavyweights and stick with Edits for the time being. Even if Instagram isn’t your main platform, this is one of the best free short‑form editors you can grab today.
