More from the App Store – great apps you might have missed [12 Feb 2021]

  • by

Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.

App of the Week

Photo Culling [Free trial, $3/£3 per month]

If you’re someone who shoots first and asks questions later when it comes to your iPhone photography, then distinguished camera manufacturer Canon might have just the app for you. The clumsily named Photo Culling is a new image sorting application that uses powerful proprietary AI technology to pick out your best images. It judges these shots based on four main factors: sharpness, noise, emotion and closed eyes. You can also use the app to cull similar or duplicate photos.

Game of the Week

Battlecruisers [Free]

Battlecruisers is free a mobile strategy game that sees you embarking in tactical naval battles with a series of futuristic foes. Its side-on silhouetted look is both easy to parse and nice to look at, while the game is also refreshingly free of gacha mechanics, free to plays incentives and in-app purchases. The only downer: you’ll need an iPad to play it. But we’ve all got one of Apple’s wonder-tablets by now, surely?

SmartNews [Free]

We love Apple’s News+  offering and its extensive suite of features, but it’s far from the only news-aggregation game in town. One firm favorite is SmartNews, a longstanding Japanese app that uses machine learning techniques to analyse and categorise countless trending new stories from a whole host of established sources. It’s one of the cleanest and most concise news-reading interfaces out there, and it also features an offline reading mode, as all good modern news apps should.
