Travel Inspiration – apps to inspire your next trip

  • by

With pandemic-based travel bans lifting in many countries and tourism firing back up again, you may be feeling the itch to take a vacation – or even just explore something new in your own neck of the woods.

If you’re looking for somewhere exciting to visit and something fun to do once you get there, we’ve pinpointed several apps that can help with the decision-making.

These apps won’t just inspire you to go exploring again, they’ll hopefully uncover new and interesting things you’ve never heard of before.

So, if you’re looking to go beyond the well-trodden fare found on Tripadvisor and Airbnb, give the following apps a try. Happy travels!

Pro tip: before traveling overseas, download an offline map of the area you’re staying in with Google Maps. That way, even if you’ve got poor signal or an expensive cell plan, you won’t be stuck without directions.

Skyscanner

You may have used Skyscanner before to find the cheapest flights from A to B, and it remains an incredibly useful tool for comparisons like that. But what we like about the app is its ability to inspire you with amazing bargains; the modern-day equivalent of turning up at the airport and asking to board the cheapest flight leaving that day. Choose Explore Everywhere from the Home tab and pick your nearest airport as the origin – but no set destination. The app then searches countless flights and sorts them by price, so you can take an impromptu trip without breaking the bank.

LuckyTrip

This is a really fun way for spontaneous people to go on an adventure (or unspontaneous people to get out of their comfort zones). Set a few parameters, tap the Lucky button, and the app will randomize a full itinerary for you. Somewhere to go, somewhere to stay, and something to make you happy. The handpicked list of 300 uniquely interesting destinations is sure to throw up something unexpected, and if you don’t like the look of it, just roll again!

LuckyTrip

Bizarre Travel

This app is new on the scene, and though it’s clearly inspired by LuckyTrip, it differentiates itself by waging war on boring trips. Instead, the app focuses squarely on the weird and wonderful, tailoring travel suggestions to you based on your answers to a quick personality quiz. Just as good for finding a new place to meet a friend nearby as it is to plan a pilgrimage halfway around the world, this is an app that’s sure to create some good memories if you follow its lead.

Unravel

This is a fantastic way to plan a trip without all the, well… planning. Instead, immerse yourself in Unravel’s curated trips, showcased with gorgeous photos and videos until you find something that looks perfect for you. You can then dig into a day-by-day itinerary composed by someone who already took the trip, essentially giving you a cheat sheet to having a good time without the effort. You can even mix and match to customize your own ideal travel plan.
