Apple is exploring an ‘expressive and functional’ robot concept

  • by

Apple is exploring how robots could move in a more lifelike, expressive way, with a view to imbuing future products with personality – but don’t expect an Apple Robot to grace stores anytime soon.

A new research paper reveals that the company has built a concept robot to study how machine learning can make robotic motion feel more natural. While this lamp-like prototype – strikingly similar to Pixar’s animated logo – could inform future Apple devices, there’s no guarantee it will ever leave the lab.

The research focuses on how movement can convey intention and emotion. For example, Apple’s robot could tilt slightly and pause before pointing, creating the illusion of thoughtfulness rather than just executing a command in the most efficient manner. Subtle changes in speed and posture could make robotic interactions feel more human-like.

This ties into rumors that Apple is developing a tabletop home robot, codenamed J595, expected around 2026 or 2027. Reports suggest it could feature an iPad-like display mounted on a moving arm, allowing it to track users for smart home control, FaceTime calls, or security monitoring. It could also feasibly include the lamp element from Apple’s prototype, although that’s more of a stretch.

That said, J595 is separate from Apple’s rumored “HomePad”, which could launch much sooner as an evolution of the HomePod smart speaker. And as Apple’s canceled Apple Car project proves, even years of R&D don’t always lead to a finished product.

Still, Apple’s research suggests that if it ever does enter the robotics space, it won’t just build another cold, mechanical assistant – it wants a robot that feels like it belongs in your home.
