More stunning visual puzzles from the Monument Valley series
Monument Valley is one of the biggest hits in the history of the App Store. The gorgeous puzzler about navigating impossible geometry launched to critical acclaim in 2014, picking up Apple’s Game of the Year award. It’s been downloaded more than 30 million times, thanks in part to its many features by Apple and its appearance on the hit show House of Cards.
Well, at WWDC this week Apple dropped the news of a surprise sequel to the hit game. Monument Valley 2 is here, and available right now. Like its predecessor, the gameplay mostly involves manipulating parts of the environment in an MC Escher-like world that defies conventional logic. As ever, the sound design and the artwork in particular are stunning. Monument Valley’s art style has been copied time and time again in the last three years, but nobody does it better than developers ustwo. From what we’ve seen so far, this new game is even more beautiful than the last one.
The game is a relatively casual experience, offering light challenges that should appeal to anyone – even if you’re not usually a gamer. This time it focuses on two protagonists, a mother and daughter, which presents new and interesting challenges to overcome as a pair. The narrative doesn’t follow on from the last one, so newbies to the series can dive straight in.
So far, this is an Apple exclusive, though it will be coming to Android devices at some point. Monument Valley can be downloaded from the App Store for $4.99/£4.99.
