Slingshot Racing Review: Innovative, Icy Fun

Whereas most iOS racers closely resemble their console-based forebears, Slingshot Racing is a decidedly touch-based affair. The title depicts a beautiful steampunk reality, where racing doesn’t revolve around asphalt, petrol and rubber, but instead sleds, ice, and grappling hooks.

The really smart thing about Slingshot Racing is the controls, which require precisely one thumb. Hold the screen and your sled’s hook attaches itself to the nearest tower, enabling you to tackle the nearest icy bend. Success in races depends on precise timing, grabbing and releasing each tower at just the right moment to maximize your speed and provide the best line of attack.

Grappling hooks and crazy speeds. It’s what Batman would do when racing on ice. If he owned a batsled. Probably.

Events are short, and your objectives are varied. Straightforward races are fun, as are knockouts, which feature a giant sledge-munching maniac (suitably dubbed ‘The Chomper’) relentlessly closing in. Levels where you’re tasked with grabbing cogs on the track are comparatively tedious, but must be endured to get the points needed to unlock subsequent tournaments, unless you opt for the $2.99/£1.99 ‘Access All Areas’ IAP.
