Meet AirPods Max: Apple’s over-ear AirPods headphones

  • by

Apple has unveiled its long-anticipated over-ear AirPods headphones – called AirPods Max – with preorders now live and availability beginning Tuesday, December 15. The sleek product combines the wireless ease-of-use we know and love about Apple’s AirPods (and AirPods Pro) with powerful audio technology.

Apple has taken its time developing a pair of over-ear headphones, but it looks like the product will be worth the wait. The form and function of AirPods Max both seem impressive, and Apple isn’t holding back from celebrating the upcoming product online.

Being an AirPods product, AirPods Max offer effortless connectivity: the built-in H1 chip (which features on the second-generation AirPods and AirPods Pro) allows users to connect to their iPhone or iPad simply by bringing the device nearby. And all the other magical AirPods features we know and love are present and correct – like easy device switching and auto-pause when you take the headphones off.

Apple also claims these to be some of the most comfortable headphones on the market. Apple has used a fabric band and breathable, mesh material to enhance the comfort of its over-ear headphones. This not only makes AirPods Max feel nicer, but the fabric canopy reduces head pressure, meaning those sizeable ear-cans aren’t going to give you a headache.

However, it’s the audio quality that Apple is touting the most – and AirPods Max look to have every base covered. A smart feature called Adaptive EQ means the headphones monitor their sound output in real-time and make adaptations to low- and mid-frequencies, ensuring the best possible sound quality. AirPods Max also include Active Noise Cancellation, allowing you to zone out from the outside world and truly immerse yourself within whatever you’re listening to. And finally, support for Spatial Audio means AirPods Max deliver a theatre-like experience for content recorded in 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos.

That’s not all. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the AirPods Max feature their very own Digital Crown – inspired by the Apple Watch – for precise volume, Siri, and playback control.
