Apple releases free Sports app for tracking live scores and stats

Out of the blue, Apple just launched a brand new app sure to please sports fans. Apple Sports is a dedicated app for tracking your favorite sports teams and leagues, expanding out the functionality previously available in the News and TV app.

“We created Apple Sports to give sports fans what they want — an app that delivers incredibly fast access to scores and stats,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “Apple Sports is available for free in the App Store, and makes it easy for users to stay up to date with their favorite teams and leagues.”

Apple Sports allows fans to tailor their experience by favoriting the things they’re interested in. The app is split into two main home pages: one showing your followed teams, and one showing your followed leagues. For each match, you can check out a ton of play-by-play game stats, plus live betting odds. If you’re subscribed to a streaming service that’s showing a particular game, you’ll see a button that takes you directly to the live feed in the TV app.

At launch, the app is available in the US, UK, and Canada for iPhones running iOS 17.2 or later. Currently it allows you to track the following leagues: MLS, NBA, NCAA basketball (men’s and women’s), NHL, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Liga MX, Ligue 1, Premier League, Serie A. Apple says that more leagues are set to be added when their seasons begin.

Strangely, despite making it easier for developers to create universal apps that work across all platforms, Apple has decided that only iPhone users are interested in sports. There’s no iPad or Mac version to be seen, though you can still download the iPhone version on those platforms and scale it up if you really need to.
