Apple has updated its free Apple Sports app with Home Screen widgets and wider availability. That means live score updates for your teams, more fans around the world able to get in on the action.
A quick refresher if you missed its launch last year: Apple Sports is a essentially personalized hub for your favorite sports and teams. You can follow teams and leagues – including the NFL – get play‑by‑play stats, and jump straight into live games in the TV app when available. It’s a nice, Apple-y way to get the latest scores and see upcoming fixtures, and it just got better.
What’s new
Widgets now surface live scores and upcoming fixtures on iPhone and iPad. You can pick a My Teams widget for just your favorites or a League widget to see everything at once. Apple has also added the option to schedule Live Activities ahead of kick‑off, so big games can appear on your Lock Screen automatically when they start.
Note there are some UI inconsistencies at present, with the widget implying that my team just won the Champions League despite the final being eight months away. But the scorelines and dates seem to be accurate!
Where it’s available now
Apple Sports launched last year in the US, UK, and Canada and has since rolled out more widely. This update adds Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain – and brings second‑tier European soccer leagues like 2. Bundesliga, Ligue 2, Segunda División, Serie B, and Primeira Liga.
The app remains free and works on iPhones running iOS 17.2 or later. To get the newest features, update the Apple Sports app from the App Store.
How to add widgets
Press and hold the Home Screen until the icons jiggle, tap the + in the top corner, search for Apple Sports, then choose either My Teams or League and tap Add Widget. Press and hold a newly added widget to Edit Widget if you want to fine‑tune the team or league it shows.
