iPhone 17 event confirmed for September 9 with ‘Awe Dropping’ invite

Apple has officially confirmed the date of its next big launch. The company has sent out press invites for Tuesday, September 9, when we’ll finally get a proper look at the iPhone 17 lineup. As ever, the event will kick off at 10 a.m. PT (that’s 6 p.m. BST) from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino – and you’ll be able to stream it live from Apple’s website or YouTube channel.

Awe Dropping

The tagline for this year’s showcase is “Awe Dropping,” and as usual Apple has sprinkled in some intrigue with the design of its event page. This time, there’s even an interactive Easter egg if you view the page in Safari, letting you drag around to reveal a colorful heatmap effect. Apple rarely includes these things without meaning, so speculation is already running wild about what it might hint at for the iPhone 17.

What to expect

While Apple is keeping quiet, the rumor mill has been working overtime. The iPhone 17 series is expected to feature the usual mix of upgraded processors and camera improvements, but the big story this year could be the introduction of a brand-new slim model – reportedly dubbed the iPhone 17 Air. If true, it will prioritize a lightweight design over maximum battery and camera specs, giving buyers yet another option to choose from.

Of course, the flagship iPhone 17 Pro models are likely to get their own exclusive perks too, as Apple continues to widen the gap between regular and premium. Expect lots of talk around displays, performance, and Apple Intelligence – its latest AI features that debuted earlier this year.

More than just iPhone

It wouldn’t be September without new Apple Watches, and 2024’s Series 10 was a big anniversary edition. This time, Apple may not go quite so far, but updated models are almost guaranteed to appear alongside the iPhone reveal. There’s also chatter of refreshed AirPods and perhaps even one of those elusive “one more thing” surprises.

On the software side, Apple typically confirms rollout plans during this keynote. With iOS 18 already in developer and public beta testing, we’d expect the finished version to land within a week of the event. The same goes for iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and the rest.

How to watch

Apple’s big events used to be live stage shows, but since 2020 the company has perfected the art of glossy pre-recorded presentations. This September’s reveal will follow that format, streaming live around the world via apple.com/events and the Apple TV app.

If you can’t spare the time to watch it unfold in full, don’t worry – we’ll bring you a complete roundup of everything announced right after the event wraps.
