Flappy Bird will return to the App Store in August

The hugely popular game Flappy Bird is set to make a comeback. In an interview with CNBC, developer Dong Nguyen confirmed that he will be re-releasing the app in August and it will come with multi-player capabilities.

The game features a highly-pixelated yellow bird that you control by tapping the screen to fly as you try to make your way between two pipes on the way to a high score.

It originally exploded in popularity at the beginning of 2014 and made its way to the top of the free charts around the globe.

Copycats

The game’s popularity apparently came with some unwanted attention and Vietnam-based Nguyen decided to pull it from the App Store, claiming that it caused “addiction”.

This led to a huge number of copycat games that used the same basic idea. A developer also recently posed as Nguyen to upload an app called ‘Flappy Bird: New Season’ in the hope of cashing in on its popularity.

The real Nguyen quickly took to his Twitter account to deny that this was a new version of his app. He also posted a screenshot of a game he is currently working on alongside the message “ I am making a new game. So people can forget about Flappy Bird for a while.”

However, he revealed no further details on its release.
