Futurama puzzle game soft launches on iOS

Since a cryptic announcement on playfuturama.com last year, we’ve known that a mobile game based on the popular cartoon series was in the works. We later discovered it was to be a matching puzzle game, and now the app has soft-launched on iOS in Canada.

The game, titled Futurama: Game of Drones, will pit your drone army against rival delivery company MomCo in a kind of cargo delivery race. When the game was first announced, many expected it to be a Futurama-flavored city builder along the lines of The Simpsons: Tapped Out, but the gameplay will actually be closer to the matching mechanics of something like Candy Crush.

It’s a freemium experience so we’ll have to wait and see how much the player is rinsed for their hard-earned cash, but the writing and production team behind the game is pretty promising. As Futurama ended (for good, this time) in 2013, it’ll be nice to step back into the 31st century universe of the show – and hopefully we can expect plenty of references and fan service in amongst the puzzle-based gameplay.

No word yet on when the game will officially launch, but for the moment if you have a Canadian App Store account you’ll be able to try out the pre-release version from the App Store.
