iOS 18.5 released with satellite messaging and more

Apple has released iOS 18.5, a modest update that doesn’t add much – unless you’re an iPhone 13 user. As ever, the update also bundles in a few handy extras and bug fixes. Let’s take a quick look at what’s new.

Satellite Messaging

With iOS 18.5, the entire iPhone 13 lineup (Mini, standard, Pro and Pro Max) can now tap into carrier-provided satellite messaging. That means if you’re with a participating carrier – T-Mobile is offering a Starlink-powered trial in the US – you can send text messages when you’re outside regular cellular coverage.

Note that this update only unlocks carrier satellite services – you still won’t get Apple’s own Emergency SOS via satellite, which remains exclusive to iPhone 14 and newer.

Other Stuff

A new Pride Harmony wallpaper to brighten up your Home and Lock screens.

Parents now receive a notification whenever the Screen Time passcode is used on a child’s device—handy for keeping tabs on who’s changing limits.

“Buy with iPhone” support in the Apple TV app on third-party devices, so you can complete purchases without grabbing your credit card.

A fix for the Vision Pro companion app on iPhone, which was occasionally showing only a black screen.

How to update to iOS 18.5
Even if you’ve got Automatic Updates switched on, it’s often faster to do it yourself: open Settings > General > Software Update, then follow the prompts to download and install.
