Big changes expected for the iPad lineup in 2024

In an unusual move for the tech giant, Apple did not release any new iPad models in 2023, marking a first deviation from its tradition of updating the iPad lineup at least once each calendar year. However, this means that 2024 is set to be a bumper year for iPad enthusiasts, as Apple is reportedly gearing up to update its entire range of iPads.

The upcoming changes include updates across the board: the entry-level iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pro models are all due for hardware refreshes. Let’s see what the rumor mill expects for the upcoming 12 months.

For the iPad Pro, significant changes are on the horizon. MacRumors notes that the next-generation models are set to enter mass production in early 2024, with an anticipated launch in the spring or summer. These models are rumored to not only sport a refreshed design but also come equipped with an upgraded M3 chip, while maintaining their 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes.

The iPad Air is also poised for exciting updates, potentially including a larger screen variant and a performance boost with an M2 chip in the 6th generation model. The entry-level iPad might transition from the current 10.9-inch A14 Bionic to a more powerful A15 Bionic. Meanwhile, the iPad mini could potentially go one better, advancing from an A15 Bionic chip to the newer A16 Bionic.

To complement these hardware upgrades, Apple is reportedly developing new accessories, such as a new Apple Pencil and a redesigned Magic Keyboard. The latter is expected to feature an aluminum top case and a larger trackpad, mainly targeting the iPad Pro models.

A significant aspect of Apple’s strategy for 2024, as highlighted by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, is to reduce confusion between iPad models. We wrote a year ago about how Apple could fix its baffling iPad lineup, and we’re still waiting for an improvement.

6 different models? Talk about analysis paralysis…

Regarding launch timelines, Gurman also mentioned that the new iPad Air and iPad Pro models are expected to debut around March 2024. The updated entry-level iPad and iPad mini are slated for a later release within the year.

In summary, 2024 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Apple’s iPad lineup. Following a year without new releases, the comprehensive refresh across the entire range underscores Apple’s commitment to keeping its tablet range competitive and diverse.
