Apple releases iOS 26.7 just days before iOS 27

Apple has released iOS 26.7, bringing bug fixes and security updates to iPhone, with iPadOS 26.7 arriving alongside it for iPad. It’s the timing that stands out, though – this update lands just days before iOS 27 goes live on Monday, September 14.

Whether you should bother depends entirely on your plans for next week.

What’s in the update

Apple’s release notes are characteristically brief, so don’t expect anything new to play with. This is a maintenance release focused on fixing bugs and patching security holes – the quiet, under-the-hood work that keeps your device running smoothly and safely. iPadOS 26.7 has the same focus, so everything here applies to iPad owners too.

Jumping to iOS 27? Skip this one

If you’re planning to install iOS 27 on day one, there’s little point grabbing iOS 26.7 now. The new version covers the same ground and a whole lot more, so you’d only be adding an extra download and restart before doing it all again on Monday.

Staying on iOS 26? Install it now

For everyone else, this update matters more than it looks. iOS 26.7 is likely to be the final major release of iOS 26 – anything that follows will probably be small, security-only patches, much like the ones iOS 18 has continued to receive over the past year.

Plenty of people prefer to wait a few weeks – or months – before moving to a new version of iOS, letting the early bugs get ironed out first. If that’s you, iOS 26.7 gives you the most stable and secure version of iOS 26 to sit on for as long as you want to stay put. When iOS 27 arrives, it’s offered as a separate upgrade in Software Update, so you won’t be moved onto it unless you choose to.

How to update

Open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts to download and install the update. If you have automatic updates turned on, your device will get there eventually – but it’s quicker to trigger the update yourself.
