Apple has quietly refreshed its most affordable modern iPhone – and this one fixes almost every complaint about the last model.
The new iPhone 17e keeps the same familiar design but doubles the storage, adds MagSafe at last, boosts performance, and upgrades the camera – all while sticking to the same $599 starting price.
Oh, and it comes in soft pink. I hope Apple made enough of these things.
Same look, smarter internals
If you liked the clean, understated design of the previous “e” model, nothing dramatic has changed. The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display remains, now protected by Ceramic Shield 2 with improved scratch resistance and reduced glare. It’s still aluminum, still IP68 water and dust resistant, and still refreshingly no-nonsense.
Good news for upgraders: because there’s no major redesign, existing iPhone 16e cases are expected to fit.
The bigger story is inside. iPhone 17e runs on Apple’s new A19 chip, built on a 3nm process. Apple says it’s up to twice as fast as iPhone 11, with improved efficiency and stronger support for Apple Intelligence features in iOS 26. There’s also a new Apple-designed C1X modem, up to 2x faster than the previous C1 and more power-efficient too, helping deliver all-day battery life.
MagSafe – finally
One of the most frustrating omissions on the last “e” model was the lack of MagSafe. That’s been corrected.
iPhone 17e supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W, doubling the 7.5W wireless speeds of its predecessor. That means proper compatibility with magnetic chargers, wallets, stands, and car mounts – something many buyers expect as standard in 2026.
Double the storage, same price
Here’s the headline most budget-minded buyers will care about: iPhone 17e now starts at 256GB of storage, up from 128GB, and still costs $599.
That’s a rare move in today’s smartphone market. More base storage means more room for 4K video, high-res photos, and increasingly chunky apps – without forcing people into an upsell. There’s also a 512GB option for those who want extra headroom.
A meaningful camera upgrade
The rear camera jumps to a 48MP Fusion sensor, bringing the “two cameras in one” trick down to the affordable tier. You get an optical-quality 2x Telephoto crop, 24MP default photos, full 48MP captures if you want them, and improved Portrait mode with depth editing after the fact.
Video recording supports 4K Dolby Vision up to 60fps, plus Spatial Audio capture for playback on compatible devices. It’s not a flashy multi-lens array, but for everyday shooting it’s a serious step up.
Satellite and safety features included
Like the rest of the modern lineup, iPhone 17e supports Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My via satellite when you’re out of cellular range (where available). Crash Detection is also onboard.
iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence
Out of the box, iPhone 17e runs iOS 26, complete with the new Liquid Glass design and Apple Intelligence features like Live Translation, Call Screening, Hold Assist, and smarter photo tools.
With the A19 chip and upgraded Neural Engine, this model should last for years.
Colors, dates, and availability
iPhone 17e comes in black, white, and a new soft pink finish. Pre-orders begin March 4, with availability from March 11 in more than 70 countries.
It’s not the most exciting phone Apple has ever announced. There’s no radical new form factor or headline-grabbing feature. But that’s kind of the point.
For people who don’t need the biggest screen, the most advanced camera array, or the flashiest design – and just want a fast, durable iPhone that will last half a decade – iPhone 17e looks like a genuinely great value upgrade.
