Apple’s mid-range iPhone 17e could get a surprise launch in February

Apple’s mid-range iPhone experiment looks set to continue. A new report suggests the iPhone 17e could launch as soon as February, just a year after the iPhone 16e redefined what Apple’s “entry-level” phone looks like.

A familiar launch window

According to Macworld, citing a Chinese leaker known as Smart Pikachu, the iPhone 17e has either entered or is about to enter mass production following CES. That lines up almost exactly with the timeline of the iPhone 16e, which went into production in January 2025 and was unveiled in mid-February.

While sources like this can never be fully trusted, the timing certainly makes sense.

What might change

The iPhone 16e was a big departure from older SE models, bringing a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, an Action Button, USB-C, and Apple Intelligence support via the A18 chip. It also dropped the Home button entirely, marking the end of the compact “SE” models in Apple’s iPhone lineup.

The rumored iPhone 17e is expected to refine that formula rather than reinvent it. The biggest visual upgrade would be a move from the notch to Dynamic Island, bringing it in line with the rest of Apple’s modern iPhones. Another notable change is MagSafe. Its absence on the iPhone 16e was one of the more surprising omissions, and a previous report has suggested it could finally make the jump to the 17e.

Even with these upgrades, the iPhone 17e would likely remain a single-camera device, continuing Apple’s strategy of reserving multi-lens setups and advanced photography features for pricier models. The 60Hz display also seems set to remain, keeping a clear gap between the “e” line and the rest of the iPhone 17 range.

Apple’s bigger plan

The iPhone 16e launched at $599/£599, a significant jump from the old SE range, and it’s hard to see Apple changing that price.

More broadly, a February launch would support growing rumors that Apple plans to spread iPhone releases throughout the year, rather than concentrating everything in September.

Remember that nothing here is confirmed, but the report feels plausible. If Apple is serious about pushing its mid-range options, expect to see a quiet launch event next month. We’ll bring you all the news as soon as it drops, of course.
