OLED iPad coming in 2023

Apple will release an iPad with an OLED display in 2023, according to claims made by analysts at Display Supply Chain Consultants (via Apple Insider). Apple has only just released an iPad with a new kind of display, of course, but the latest iPad Pro’s mini-LED screen still isn’t up to the standard of OLED technology, with its true blacks and vibrant colors. Apple shifted its main iPhone line to superior OLED technology in 2017 with the iPhone X, so it only seems to be a matter of time until the iPad line follows suit.

App Tracking Transparency drives advertisers to Android

Apple’s introduction of App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14.5 has had a dramatic effect on the advertising industry, judging from recently revealed statistics. Just three months on from the release of iOS 14.5, prices for mobile ads on iOS have plummeted, while those for Android have skyrocketed. The reason for this is that some 70 percent of iOS users have opted out of ad tracking when asked. According to The Wall Street Journal (via MacWorld), advertisers “have lost much of the granular data that made mobile ads on iOS devices effective and justified their prices”.

Movable display patent granted for Apple Glass

There’s still plenty of buzz surrounding Apple’s alleged efforts to make a set of AR glasses, or Apple Glass as the project has been dubbed. This latest report is more than mere rumor, as it involves a successful patent application from Apple itself. The patent relates to a movable display, which is intended to compensate for the motion blur that has ruined many a virtual reality experience. As spotted by Apple Insider, a second patent application relates to the use of Fresnel lenses in a bid to keep the weight of the final product down. These ridged lenses are more commonly used in lighthouses and can detract and focus light with considerably less glass than regular lenses.

Report: Apple crowding out third party apps

A new report from Comscore, which was shared with The Verge, claims that both Apple and Google are crowding out third-party apps with their own default provisions. The study ranks the popularity of preinstalled iOS and Android apps, like Messages and Calendar, alongside alternative provisions. It turns out that 75 percent of the top 20 most-used apps on iOS in the US were made by Apple. Apple rejected the report’s findings, saying: “This Facebook-financed survey from December 2020 was narrowly tailored to give the false impression that there’s little competition on the App Store. In truth, third-party apps compete with Apple’s apps across every category and enjoy large scale success.”Some 60 percent of the top apps were made by Google.”
