Desktop image editor Pixelmator released for iPhone

Mobile image editing fans rejoice! The powerful and popular app Pixelmator has finally made its way to the iPhone.

Pixelmator started life as a desktop Mac app, a cheaper alternative to Photoshop but still crammed full of features and with full support for Photoshop formats. An iPad version has been around for a while now, but the developers have just released their biggest update yet, making the iOS app universal – meaning for the first time ever all that editing power is available on the iPhone.

It’s a versatile and powerful app, with a deceptively simple and intuitive interface. As well as impressive photo editing to rival apps like Enlight (which we love – check the review), Pixelmator also excels in graphic design and digital illustration. All types of artwork can be created here – and it includes a ton of features that are usually only available on desktop computers. Check out the video overview below:

Maybe the bigger screen sizes available with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus convinced the Pixelmator team that professional image editing could work on a phone. Mobile imaging apps have been getting more and more complex recently, and people are really starting to see the iPhone as a viable option for serious graphical work. Whatever the reason, Pixelmator’s design has been completely rethought to work on a smaller screen and includes impressive touch controls.

The app is $4.99 (£3.99) on the App Store, or available free to those who have previously purchased the iPad version. We’ll be reviewing the app and releasing an in-depth tutorial over the next couple of weeks – stay tuned!
