Square Enix shutdown: last chance to play 4 great games

  • by

Square Enix is one of the world’s biggest videogame developers, responsible for the Final Fantasy series amongst other big names. Its Canadian subdivision, Square Enix Montréal, has produced some excellent mobile games over the past decade, including the popular puzzle-adventure GO series that we’re big fans of.

But this year, after a rebrand to Studio Onoma, the company is permanently removing four games from the App Store, meaning you’ll never be able to play them again. Consider this your final chance for one last play session!

Studio Onoma has given notice that Arena Battle Champions, Deus Ex GO, Hitman Sniper: The Shadows, and Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes will be delisted from the App Store on December 1st. Those who already own the games, or buy them before the deadline, can continue playing until January 4th, at which point the games will be shut down forever.

Deus Ex GO

These games rely on online services to play, and it seems the studio no longer has an interest in maintaining the servers. It’s a shame, because some of those games are really great.

Hitman Sniper: The Shadows only released this year, so it’s a surprise to see it shuttered so soon – but it looks like the original Hitman Sniper game is sticking around, and it’s great fun.

Deus Ex GO is a real gem, so make sure to give it one last play if you already own it. At the time of writing, it’s still available to buy, but $5 seems a little steep for a game that will be gone within six weeks. Your money may be better spent on Hitman GO or Lara Croft GO instead, both of which hold up very well and will remain available for the foreseeable future.
