Welcome to #257 – a note from the editor

Hey there, readers. Hope you’ve all had a good Summer.

Our favorite time of the year is fast approaching; this is the last issue before Apple’s big iPhone 14 event, now officially set for September 7. We have another issue of Swipe due out two days later, which will be stuffed full of details on everything Apple announces at the event.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves! There’s still plenty to chew over in the meantime. For starters, our “best free games” cover story. We all know that gaming on iPhone is a huge industry, raking in more cash than traditional console games despite generally offering much more casual fare. But mobile gaming too often is split into two camps: premium games that cost a fair few bucks, and ‘freemium’ fare that tries to mine players’ wallets via in-app purchases and virtual currencies. Head to the Reviews section for our pick of the very best games in which free really does mean free.

Elsewhere, we have a great piece in the Features section looking at the apps, gadgets, and tricks you’ll need to get the most out of your TV and movie watching across iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. We’re also exploring the potential for Apple to improve on its widgets.

We’re almost at the end of our How-To series focused on all the great new stuff coming in iOS 16 – which should be released by the next time I’m writing these editor’s notes, so be sure read our guides to prepare yourself for what’s to come!

All that and more in this issue of Swipe – see you next time!
