Welcome to #279 – a note from the editor

Love it or loathe it, the social media landscape has changed a lot this year. Twitter and Reddit are going through difficult times, while new social networks spring up almost every month, including the all-new Threads app that hit 10m users in its first 10 hours of existence. It can be hard to keep track, so in this issue’s cover story we’ve done our best to explain the pros and cons of all the big social apps – plus a couple of smaller ones that feel like a breath of fresh air.

Besides that, we’ve also got roundups of some of the best journaling and reflection apps to check out before Apple launches its own Journal app later this year – plus a revisit of the ‘five-minute wonder’ apps we first wrote about 3 years ago, and a selection of amazing rhythm games for iOS.

Lead writer Craig also takes us through his experience with Duolingo, outlining the pros and cons of the gamified language app. He’s also wrestling with the aftermath of the Apple Vision Pro announcement, contemplating who the next-gen device is really for and what its future might hold.

Finally, we’ve also got the latest news stories and a deep dive into some of the coolest features of iOS 17. Enjoy!
