Welcome to #285 – a note from the editor

Welcome back!

Our last issue came hot on the heels of the iPhone 15 reveal, and since then millions of the things have shipped to customers. To celebrate, our How-To section dives into some cool stuff you can only do with the latest models, including customizing the all-new Action Button and taking advantage of USB-C to charge other devices from your iPhone itself.

Anyone who picked up a new device will most definitely want to check out our “bare necessities” cover story. Head to the Reviews section as we revisit our yearly roundup of the best and most essential apps to install on a new iPhone. Or indeed, any iPhone. Not content with just one big roundup, we’ve also published a similar piece for Apple Watch owners. You’re welcome.

More excitingly for those of you who haven’t splashed out on a new device is the public release of iOS 17, which works on all the same models iOS 16 did last year. We’ve been writing about it all Summer while beta testing – did you notice? – but it’s great for it to finally reach the masses. But the release wasn’t without hiccups: we’ve already had two security updates and a privacy scare. See the News section for more on that.

All that and plenty more in this jam-packed issue. Enjoy!
