Traditionally, getting a hearing test involved booking an appointment, traveling to a clinic, and sitting through a formal evaluation. But with AirPods Pro 2, the process has been simplified to take just five minutes in a quiet space. With millions of people unknowingly living with some degree of hearing loss, this feature could be a game changer. Here’s how it works and why it’s worth trying.
Note that at the time of writing, this feature isn’t available in all regions due to regulatory issues.
First thing’s first: ensure your AirPods Pro 2 are updated to the latest firmware. (Updates take place automatically when AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of a paired iPhone or iPad.) You’ll also need to be connected to a device running iOS 18.1 or higher.
To start, open the Settings app on your device and tap on your AirPods under the connected devices section. Select Take a Hearing Test from the options, and get yourself comfortable in a quiet, distraction-free environment. The app will evaluate background noise and ear tip fit before you get started.
When you’re ready, the test itself is a simple one. Simply listen carefully and tap the screen whenever you hear a tone. The test takes about five minutes, and your results are immediately available in the Health app. You can also export your audiogram as a PDF for sharing with a healthcare professional if needed.
Your results include a hearing classification based on decibels of hearing level (dBHL). Ranges from 0 to 25 dBHL indicate normal hearing, while higher values suggest some level of hearing loss depending on the exact figures. If you’re lucky you might even register a negative score, which indicates extremely good hearing. A detailed chart of your hearing across different frequencies is also available, making it easier to identify specific issues.
If you have mild to moderate hearing loss, Apple offers features like Media Assist to enhance sound clarity in calls and media playback. For severe hearing loss or sudden changes, Apple recommends consulting a healthcare professional.
