Securely store login details and more with Apple’s Passwords app | iOS 18 Guide

  • A home for all the login details stored in iCloud Keychain
  • Find out which of your passwords may have been compromised
  • You can make QR codes that grant access to known Wi-Fi networks

Say hello to the Passwords app. This app conveniently brings together all your login details, security alerts, verification codes, and autofill information. Basically, the boring stuff you’re always forgetting. It syncs automatically across all your devices, making sure you can easily access these important details wherever you need them. The app can even generate custom QR codes for easily sharing your Wi-Fi password. Let’s dive in!

Getting started

You’ll find Passwords on your Home Screen or the App Library – assuming you have iOS 18 or higher – and can redownload it from the App Store if you previously deleted it. When opening the app, you’ll be prompted to authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to ensure that only you can access your stored data.

Managing passwords

If you previously used Apple’s iCloud Keychain—a tool Apple uses to securely store your passwords across your devices—you’ll find all your saved logins already waiting in the Passwords app. At the top of the screen, there’s a search bar to quickly find a specific account, or you can scroll through the list sorted into categories.

Tapping on any entry lets you see the stored details for that login. The password itself stays hidden initially, but you can tap to reveal it, or select Copy Password to easily paste it elsewhere. If any information isn’t correct, tap Edit to change it, or Delete Password if it’s no longer useful.

Passwords and logins automatically appear in the Passwords app whenever you create a new account on a website or an app while iCloud Keychain is enabled. These details also show up automatically when logging into accounts with AutoFill. But you can still manually add a login yourself – just tap the + button from the main screen and enter the details.

Sharing passwords and Wi-Fi

One standout feature in iOS 18 is the ability to share passwords securely via AirDrop. Tap on the entry you want to share, then tap the share icon and follow the prompts. This sharing process uses end-to-end encryption, meaning the information stays completely private and secure between you and the recipient.

You can also share Wi-Fi passwords with other people with ease, if you’re in the same room. Head to the Wi-Fi section and choose your network – if you’re already connected to it, you’ll see it at the top of the list in blue. Then tap Show Network QR Code and hold out your phone. The other person can scan the QR code with their camera app from any device to automatically connect to your network.

Security warnings

he Passwords app helps you keep your accounts secure with built-in security recommendations. This feature reviews your saved passwords and alerts you if any are weak, reused across multiple sites, or compromised (exposed in a data breach). Check the Security category within the app to find any accounts needing your attention, along with practical suggestions for improving their security.

Cross-device sync

All your passwords and login details stay synchronized through iCloud Keychain. This means your passwords are available on every Apple device signed in with your Apple ID, ensuring your important information is always at hand. Remarkably, you can even access these passwords on Windows computers by installing the iCloud Passwords extension in your web browser.
