How to adjust your AutoFill settings for addresses, payment cards, and passwords

AutoFill in iOS makes your life easier by quickly entering personal details, credit card information, and passwords into web forms and apps – all there at the tap of a button to save your fallible human brain having to memorize too much, and to save your typing fingers from too much work.

But what if the information needs updating? What if you want to access it manually? What if you want to cut down on the personal info saved to iCloud? Luckily, you can view and amend all this data easily enough. Here’s how to manage and customize AutoFill settings to make sure it always stays helpful.

Confusingly, AutoFill options are split across two sections of the Settings app. Start by heading to the Apps section and then choosing Safari > AutoFill.

Here, you’ll see an option called Use Contact Info. Ensure this is toggled on if you’d like Safari to automatically populate web forms with your personal details, like your full name, address and phone number. You may need to to press My Info to choose the correct contact details from your address book. If your information isn’t up-to-date, head to the Contacts app and tap your name at the top to edit the details in your contact card.

Below this setting, you’ll see an option for Credit Cards. Keep this toggled on to allow Safari to grab any card numbers you’ve got stored when you might need them, or turn it off if you’d rather not use the feature. Tap Saved Credit Cards to view or manage your stored cards (you can also find this information from Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay).

AutoFill is also used to help fill login information from any app – not just Safari. Navigate to Settings > General, then tap AutoFill & Passwords. Here, you can disable the feature entirely or select your preferred password source, whether that’s Apple’s built-in Passwords app or a third-party password manager like 1Password. Note that you can choose one app for filling in passwords and another for generating new ones if that’s your preference – be sure to choose the app you prefer from the Set Up Codes In section. For more in-depth management of passwords, you’ll need to head to the Passwords app itself (or your chosen alternative).

An extra handy feature in the Password settings is Delete After Use. When enabled, verification codes received through Messages and Mail are automatically deleted once you’ve used them, helping to keep your inbox clean and clutter-free. Toggle this off if you’d rather maintain manual control.
