Google Maps’ futuristic Live View feature combines augmented reality (AR) with real-world navigation, making it easier than ever to follow directions when exploring unfamiliar areas. If you’ve ever struggled to translate 2D map instructions into the real world – or you simply enjoy a dash of sci-fi – this feature remains one of Google’s most useful hidden gems.
Using Live View is simple. Open Google Maps and search for your destination as normal, then choose walking directions. Once you have your route, look toward the bottom of the screen for the Live View button. Tap this, and the app will prompt you to calibrate your location by briefly pointing your camera at nearby buildings or street signs.
After calibration, your iPhone’s camera view will display directional arrows, street names, and prompts precisely overlaid onto the real environment. These visuals dynamically update as you move, clearly indicating upcoming turns and providing extra confidence in unfamiliar surroundings. If you lower your phone or tilt it horizontally, Maps automatically switches back to the regular 2D map view – but raise it again and Live View instantly resumes.
Google has expanded the Live View experience significantly since its launch. Recent updates add local landmarks directly to the camera view, helping you easily orient yourself, even in complex urban areas. These landmarks include recognizable places like famous buildings, parks, and tourist attractions, each clearly labeled and visible through your phone’s camera.
Additionally, Google now offers Indoor Live View in select locations such as airports, train stations, and large malls, guiding you directly to gates, restrooms, shops, or information desks – perfect for quickly navigating complex indoor spaces.
There’s also the handy Lens in Maps feature (formerly called “Search with Live View”). This lets you point your camera at nearby businesses to quickly see reviews, opening hours, or transit information directly in AR. It’s especially helpful when you’re exploring new neighborhoods or traveling somewhere unfamiliar.
As always, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings when using Live View – especially in busy or traffic-heavy areas – and use the feature primarily when stationary or safely off to the side of busy streets.
