Ask an expert: Apple’s iconic wallpaper designs

No time to drop into the Apple Store and ask the Genius Bar for help with your iPhone or iPad? Maybe one of our resident experts can help!

As Apple nerds, we get asked a lot of tech support questions — and some of those questions crop up time and time again. Here’s a recent query that we think will be familiar to many of you.

“How can I get the wallpaper images Apple uses for its marketing shots?”

Apple is well know for providing high-quality wallpaper designs to go with new iterations of iOS as well as each new iPhone and iPad release. These backgrounds help the devices stand out in marketing shots and some of them are truly gorgeous. Unfortunately, only a recent subset of those images are available in the Wallpaper section of Settings.

So what can you do if you want to get hold of an unreleased background image from a recent press release or an iconic design from years gone by?

Luckily for us, there are plenty of canny people out there putting in the effort to recreate and preserve these designs for the world to use. You just need to know where to look.

For those of us who watched Apple’s recent Spring Loaded event and were looking to replicate some of the colorful new designs shown off throughout, iDownloadBlog has curated recreations which are freely available to download and use – follow this link, then press and hold your preferred design and tap Add to Photos.

For a huge archive of historical Apple designs, instead visit this public Google Photos album and follow the same procedure to save the images to your camera roll. Here you’ll find iPhone wallpapers from as far back as 2007!

Some of the designs shipped with iOS 12 but no longer provided in iOS 14

Once you’ve picked something and downloaded it, find the wallpaper in your camera roll and hit the Share button followed by Use as Wallpaper.
