Apple releases a new suite of iPhones each year, and often the changes between models are pretty subtle. If you’re not up to speed on all the little details, it might not be obvious which exact iPhone you own – especially if it was a gift or hand-me-down.
This can be a problem when it comes to buying a case, checking compatibility, or selling your device – but luckily, there’s an easy way to figure out which handset you have.
You’ll need to locate your device’s model number. If you already know it, skip to the end and cross-reference it with our list to see which model it represents.
If you don’t know the model number, don’t worry.
Find your model number
Older iPhones – those released before 2017 – have a model number etched on the back. Check the fine print for a number beginning with ‘A’.
If you have a newer device (or can’t make out the fine print) you can find that same model number in the Settings app instead. Head to General > About > Model Number to find that elusive ‘A’ number. If you see a different type of number – something like MQ1F3ZD/A – simply tap it once to switch to the ‘A’ number instead.

Once you’ve located your model number, you can check it against the list below to see which exact device you own. Regional variants account for some models having multiple numbers – the first number on each line is the US version.
