Apple releases a new iPhone lineup every year, and the differences between models aren’t always obvious at a glance. If your phone was a gift or a hand-me-down – or you’ve just lost track – it’s not always easy to know exactly which one you’re holding.
That matters more than you’d think. Buying a case, checking feature compatibility, or listing the device for sale all require knowing the exact model. Fortunately, there’s a quick way to find out.
You’ll need to locate your device’s model number – a code beginning with ‘A’ – and cross-reference it with the list below. On older iPhones (pre-2017), this is etched into the back in fine print. On anything newer, head to Settings > General > About > Model Number. If you see a different format – something like MQ1F3ZD/A – just tap it once to switch to the ‘A’ number.
Each iPhone model has several ‘A’ numbers, as Apple uses different variants for different regions. The first number listed for each model below is the US version. If you’re outside the US, your number will still appear in the list – just not necessarily first.
