How to use Live Listen to amplify nearby sounds via AirPods

Live Listen is an iOS feature that streams audio from your iPhone’s microphone directly to your AirPods or Beats headphones. Originally designed to assist users with hearing difficulties, it’s a versatile tool with a number of interesting use cases – one of which is the ability to “bug” a room to listen in on conversations. (Not that we condone such behavior!)

Whatever the reason, we can certainly show you how it works.

Configuring Live Listen

To begin, ensure your AirPods or Beats headphones are connected to your iPhone. Then, open Control Center, long-press anywhere and tap Add a Control. Scroll to the Hearing section and add the Live Listen control.

Once added, with your headphones in and connected, tap Live Listen to activate the feature. Place your iPhone near the sound source you wish to amplify, and the audio will stream directly to your ears. The Live Listen interface lets you know that your AirPods are connected, and even gives you an indication of the volume of incoming sound.

Practical uses

Live Listen can be beneficial in numerous scenarios, whether chatting to someone in a noisy setting or listening to a lecture or meeting where it’s difficult to hear the speaker. Of course, you can place it anywhere you like and – so long as you stay within range of the iPhone – you’ll be able to hear whatever is picked up on your headphones. Handy!
