Best new apps and games – March 25, 2017

Lots of interesting things in the App Store this week, from an app to spruce up your iPhone to an app to help teach your kids French. Plus there were some really great games released this week, and an old favorite utility that’s just been given a new shot in the arm courtesy of Apple itself… read on for more details about our favorites from the last seven days!

Card Thief

Price: $1.99/£1.99  • Version: 1.0 • Size: 140 MB

The follow-up to the excellent solitaire-based Card Crawl (see our review), this is another take on solo card gaming. Card Thief again takes a deck of cards but this time applies it to stealth gaming. Sneak around stealing treasures without getting caught in this accessible yet highly strategic and addictive game. It takes a few rounds to get to grips with the rules but when it clicks it’s very satisfying!

More or less Minecraft in 2D, this is a shelter-building survival game with a bit of dungeon crawling thrown in for good measure. You can adjust the difficulty and world type to your liking – meaning you can play the game how you like, whether you prefer fishing, farming, building, crafting, or treasure hunting. Just watch out for those night monsters!

This is a language-learning app for kids, encouraging children to speak a little bit of French every day. It follows in the footsteps of similar Pili Pop apps for English and Spanish and got a big thumbs up from Apple, so you know it’s good! It’s a fun way to learn through play, using voice recognition to help kids get their pronunciation right from day one.

Workflow is your personal automation tool, enabling you to drag and drop any combination of actions to create powerful workflows for your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. This isn’t a new app, but it’s just been bought up by Apple and immediately made free – now’s a great time to jump on board and check it out. We reckon there will be some cool new features on the horizon under its new ownership!
