We’ve long been admirers of CARROT Weather, the snarky forecast app packed with all the features and customizations you could ever want – including a full musical to celebrate its one-decade anniversary. Yes, really.
One of the things we love most about CARROT is that it never stands still. No laurels getting any rest around here, thank you. Despite its success the app’s solo dev continues to refine, consistently adding new things, and the latest v6.7 update brings two very helpful additions: trip planning and custom notifications.
Trip Planner is exactly what it sounds like – a dedicated way to track forecasts for vacations, business trips, and other multi-day adventures, with support for both single- and multi-stop itineraries. For trips further out, you get monthly estimates, then the app automatically switches to detailed daily forecasts as your departure date gets closer. No more manually checking back every few days to see if a proper forecast has finally appeared.
Custom Notifications, meanwhile, fixes a gap that may have bugged a particular group of weather nerds with very specific needs. Previously, CARROT’s custom data point alerts only fired on a schedule. Now they can trigger the moment a threshold is crossed – so you get pinged the second the UV index hits dangerous territory and it’s time for sunscreen, or the instant the temperature drops below freezing and your plants need bringing in. It makes the notifications actually useful in the moment, rather than telling you about a problem after it’s already started.
These additions both require the Premium Ultra upgrade – weather data ain’t cheap. They build on a feature set we’ve already gone deep on, including custom layouts, granular notification thresholds, and a personality dial that ranges from mild to full existential dread. It also supports Acme-style multi-model forecasts.
Weather utilities are one of the most competitive categories on the App Store, but this latest update gives CARROT Weather – already our fave of the bunch – another little leg up, and another confirmation that it’s going to be around for the long haul. Probably much longer than us meatbags.
