If you’re serious about redesigning a room, or even just making sure that new sofa will fit where you think it’s going to fit, having a dimensioned floor plan for reference can be incredibly helpful. But measuring rooms with a tape measure is a painstaking process, and still leaves you having to draw up the plans by hand. Not everyone has the time or know-how for that!
Luckily, there’s an app for that. RoomScan can draw complex floor plans all by itself, using the sensors in your iPhone or iPad. It feels a bit like magic when the app spits out a fully dimensioned floor plan with such little input from the user. All you have to do is tap a few walls with your device and voilà: it’s done! You can save the plans to the camera roll for free, or buy credits to export more technical formats if you want to send the drawings to a professional architect or designer.
We liked this app enough to include it in our interior design roundup earlier this year, and since the arrival of ARKit with iOS 11 it’s more accurate than ever. We were surprised to see it on sale so soon after a big update, but for a limited time the app has gone completely free. Definitely worth your time if you have any DIY projects planned for the near future!
