iOS 16.7.1 released: vital security update for older devices

Apple recently released iOS 17.0.3 to address iPhone 15 overheating problems and patch critical security vulnerabilities. Now, a similar update has gone live for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, ensuring users with older devices that can’t run the latest software are still protected.

It’s only a small slice of active devices that will benefit from this release, but Apple says updating is recommended for all users. The bugs squashed in this update are the same as the ones tackled in iOS 17.0.3, which Forbes reported would allow bad actors to “elevate their privileges” and “execute code,” neither of which sound good.

Specifically, this update will be available for any device from the iPhone 8 or iPhone X series, both of which support iOS 16 but not iOS 17. It’s also available for the 5th-generation iPad and 1st-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

If you own one of the aforementioned devices, we advice you update immediately. Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for the latest available version of iOS.
