Trump to Cook & other Silicon Valley tech pioneers: “I’m here to help”

President-elect Donald Trump has met with various individuals in high-level roles at major US tech companies, including Apple’s Tim Cook.

Trump told them “I’m here to help,” during his initial greeting, before members of the press left the room.

As reported by the New York Times, the group, which included Elon Musk of Tesla, Jeff Bezos of Amazon and more, met in a 25th-floor conference room at Trump Tower in Manhattan on Wednesday.

He continued, “There’s nobody like you in the world. In the world! There’s nobody like the people in this room.”

The comments demonstrate a change in tact for Trump, who, during his campaign, said he’d force Apple to make their products in the US, and that Amazon was going to have antitrust problems.

Though members of the press weren’t allowed to stay for the meeting, the NYT did say that sources revealed the meeting was genial, and that the group mostly discussed “vocational education and the need for more of it, the promise and peril of trade with China and immigration.”

There are also plans to meet quarterly moving forward. For more details on what was discussed and what it means for the tech industry, it’s worth reading the full report on the New York Times. There’s also a video of the initial introduction.
