Ask an expert: quick unit and currency conversions

No time to drop into the Apple Store and ask the Genius Bar for help with your iPhone or iPad? Maybe one of our resident experts can help!

As Apple nerds, we get asked a lot of tech support questions — and some of those questions crop up time and time again. Here’s a recent query that we think will be familiar to many of you.

“What’s the best way to quickly convert currencies and weights?”

Conversion tables are a simple utility that will always be useful, but finding the right conversions online can often be frustrating – especially when all you need is a super-quick reference. It should be easy, right? Well here are a few ways to keep it that way…

First, you can ask Siri to covert all kinds of measures for you. Just say “Hey Siri, how many feet in one meter?” or “Hey Siri, what’s $200 in Euros?” and you’ll get an instant answer.

But Siri doesn’t yet have the answer for everything, and sometimes a full table of conversions is easier to scan. In those situations, grab a dedicated conversion app to do the heavy lifting.

If you find yourself embroiled in currency conversions a lot, Elk is a superb choice, with a smart interface for quickly changing both the scale and units of its easy lookup tables. This has long been the go-to app for travelers and is especially handy if you have an Apple Watch too.
